Back in the days I was growing up in India, a primary national goal was for our country to be self-sufficient in food, so we could forever leave behind the famines of the past. This was achieved thanks to M.S.Swaminathan and others, but now in our "flat world", self-sufficiency has come to be seen as quaint and old-fashioned. But these stories show why it is absolute suicide for a nation of any size to not be self-sufficient in food...
